you say Saturday could be crazy:
there'll be popcorn & board games
we'll break out monopoly
so i get to your place & we set up
i'm the Rothschild of Blue
& you're in love with the Electric Company
i'm rounding Vine Street
headed past Trafalgar Square
inching towards Mayfair
pretty soon you're losing quite badly
you're bleeding cash from the shoe
i'm not sure about your strategy
you mortgage Fenchurch at Whitehall
sell the EC at Oxford
smile at me attractively
i keep rounding Vine Street
head down past Trafalgar Square
inching towards Mayfair
when you land on a hotel at Euston
i do a dance with my hat
i sense impending victory
but you introduce a new house rule
you say "personal items now
count as valid currency"
i'm a little puzzled when you
lose your shirt at Leicester Square
but you don't seem to care
you say, "i'll tell you a little secret:
i've only got one piece to spare
& i'm inching towards Mayfair"

sawdust & acetone
03:03
|

all caught up in blankets & pillowcases. you hide yourself in winter coats & negligees. but i saw you once without the mask, you wore no makeup. tears rolled down cheekbones.
& time moves along. calling me up just to say you've turned to stone, then you're gone. think you thought it'd last forever.
all caught up in powertools & coarse sandpaper. said we'd build a better life from 2 x 4's. but it's all bent nails & flaking plywood & useless tables. & the puddles you tracked home.
& time moves along. calling me up just to say you're in oregon on the beach. thinking you might find a little peace.
all caught up in the scent of you, i wish i wasn't. i'll meet you down at the high school in the old wood shop. where the air still smells of cigarettes & accidents & sawdust & acetone.

j.h. goldilocks
02:40
|

at night there are wolves
i hear them howling from the canyon
souls in the walls
hear the bats in the halls
fear is gonna blow this house down
nights like this i wouldn't wish on anyone
cause no one believes in fairy tales
but fairy tales believe in you
jesus h goldilocks
i see a light under the juniper tree
three bears with a spoon
riding with the man in the moon
but this ain't no children's tale
no it ain't gonna end well
nights like this i wouldn't wish on anyone
cause no one believes in fairy tales
but fairy tales believe in you
girls without hands
cinderella at the dance
duel to the death
with the wicked witch from the west
& in the east the sun is rising
nights like this i wouldn't wish on anyone
cause no one believes in fairy tales
but fairy tales believe in you
& they know where you live
it's true, fairy tales believe
in you

sunk cost
02:23
|
|||
admit that i was scared
i couldn't empty out my head
of the fragile things you always said
would suffocate me
now i'm down below the lake
where the algae & the catfish snake
between the shellfish & the rocks
that wrap around me
a room made of sea nurtures me
grow gills & sleep on a water bed
& the moon may shine down
but i wouldn't know
i'm living too far down below
near the bottom of the sea
there's an old man waiting around for me
with a glass of rum & a tv
that's all i care for
i will stay inside my room
on a ship that sank 300 years
before you knew that i was here
i am its captain
& you're the first mate of nothing
nothing gained, nothing lost
a calculated sunk cost
but sometimes at dusk
when the sun goes down
i feel you walking along the beach
try to think of a way to reach you
make my way to the surface
i'll break for the surface
of the sea

bayou song
02:14
|
|||
when my car wouldn't start, we left it out by the bayou
hitch-hiked 40 miles to the nearest gasoline station
found a cheap motel where we could spend the night talking
about your fear of highways and trips out on the ocean
while the battery lay spent out in the great wide open
you slept so close to me that you touched me for the first time
& that's how i found out about the scar from your ex-boyfriend
& the way that you shake when you're trying hard not to open
brushed away that insight, so that i wouldn't be left haunted
by the ghost of the bayou that looked over my shoulder
while i did what i had to do to put you back in order
in the morning i confessed, broke right down beside you
that i'd left the lights on just so i could get inside you

kaleidoscope pirates
02:01
|

get out your kaleidoscope, let's pay a visit to the park. i'll meet you by the barbecue grill. we'll find the hydrants in the dark, unscrew them & start a river. pretend we had a raft. you can be captain, that's fine, i'll man the mast. when we were sailing, i watched time slip away; you drew the lines with your compass & i was ready to obey. fractal patterns charted a course to bombay, or anywhere the winds could take us. we were ready to take on anything. fearless us, mighty pirates now, streaming down this snowy river way. "set a course for booty!" i yelled as we turned into a sad cliche. i had your laugh in my head while i was charting the attack. "they've got guns & bayonets, so watch your back." when we were sailing, i watched time slip away; you drew the lines with your compass & i was ready to obey. fractal patterns turning our ship every way. didn't know which way home was & it was getting kind of late. so you got out your kaleidoscope & rotated to a new degree. we spotted two park rangers in a golf cart heading out to sea. i nearly jumped overboard. "run them through! make em walk the plank!" but they blew apart the galley & we sank.
